THEY’RE CLOSE ENOUGH THAT HE CAN DROP BY UNANNOUNCED, if she’s home, if she’s not — sometimes after the long hours of running errands, he’s the one opening the door to let her inside. to them, it’s a source of comfort; knowing that they’ve found this stability within one another. even now, as spike’s head makes a home within her lap alex finds herself enveloped in the warmth of the moment. fingers idly ran through his hair as her other hand held a book, reading out loud one of her favourite fairy tales.

… —— the prince was sent off to visit foreign kingdoms within the royal coach pulled by six white horses, to look for a princess grand enough to be his wife. but at the very first cross-roads, the way was stopped by an enormous lindworm, enough to frighten the bravest. he lay in the middle of the road with a great wide open mouth and cried, “ a bride for me before a bride for you then the prince made the coach turn round and try another road: but it was all no use — for, at the first cross-ways, there lay the lindworm again, crying out, “ a bride for me before a bride for youso the prince ——

and what is a lindworm, exactly?

there’s a pause, the story temporarily forgotten as she struggles with an accurate answer to his question. a monster. she says finally, ignoring the way his nose scrunches with dissatisfaction. i’ve never actually seen a lindworm, spike. use your imagination. again, her attention is focused on the book in hand, when she feels spike wiggling around, head craning in an effort to see what she’s reading.

are there pictures?

she holds the book out, revealing nothing but pages of text. nope, no pictures.

now he looks thoroughly unamused, his expression almost saying then what’s the point? she refrains from rolling her eyes, instead settling him down once more in her lap to continue.

silence ensued, and carefully alex lifted the book; not at all surprised to see a now sleeping spike pressed against her middle. a sigh, and she puts the novel aside; leaning down to press a light kiss to the other’s forehead.

next time, i’ll make sure there’s lots of pictures, okay?
